This course is intended to familiarize the student with the basic mathematical and electrical concepts necessary to understand the function of various components utilized in motor control circuits; pilot devices, relays, contactors, motor starters, motors electromechanical timing relays, electronic components and variable frequency drives (VFDs). The lab assignments are designed to facilitate the wiring, electrical practices (using appropriate hand tools, connectors, wire termination and routing) and utilizing standard test equipment to identify a functional or faulty component/circuit. This class is designed as a stand-alone study or as a pre-requisite to the Industrial PLC class.

This course will address the programming and application of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). Hands-on instruction in industrial type applications of PLCs requiring motion control and a study of automated manufacturing and the functions of PLCs in an industrial environment is provided. Coverage will include timers, counters, program control, data manipulation, math instructions sequencers, shift registers, types of PLC systems, PLC installation, editing, troubleshooting, process control, data acquisition, PLC networks and computer-controlled machines? processes.
